SO. Downton Abbey. Tell me about it. I know a lot of you are fans, and it gets good reviews, but I can't tell if it's actually a great show or if it's just good fun for people who enjoy that sort of standard upstairs-downstairs BBC period piece. YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE.

Also, Hell on Wheels, which appears to have made zero impact on fandom at large. Anybody seen it? Nothing can ever match Deadwood, but I'm willing to give it a whirl.

I've been watching Hell on Wheels, although I don't know why, as it's not very emotionally compelling. I think that's why fandom has ignored it. Yet I tune in every Sunday evening for it. I mean, it's not bad, and there are some interesting characters that are...well, interesting, but I don't feel as if I would have missed anything had I not watched. So I guess I'm just saying it's good, but I wish I could care more about it.

I'm tempted to watch just because, hey, a western, I love westerns. Although I'm much more willing to forgive a 1940's movie for being emotionally lacking than a modern tv show. Hmm.

If it's the genre you're tempted by, then I'm sure that giving it a shot won't do much harm :) I always give a series two or three episodes before I make the decision to keep it or drop it. Tonight is the season finale so it must have been doing something right, storytelling-wise at least for me.

I actually kind of like Hell on Wheels? It's got a similar flavor to Deadwood but it's definitely its own show at the same time - and Common can get into my lady-pants any day of the week, basically.

NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE HOW MUCH I LOVE DOWNTON. The dialogue is sexy, there's plenty of drama to keep you engrossed, and Maggie Smith is a gem.

I like downton and am not generally a fan of that sort of period piece, for what it's worth.
